CHAPTER 22
A screech? What is he doing? Does he actually think itâs funny?
I glare at him and he smiles back. He thinks this is a joke or maybe, that Iâm the joke. Iâll show him. Let the games begin.
Smiling, I offer my violin. âDo you want to trade?â
âTrade? Why?â
âApparently the one you have is a little squeaky.â
âItâs fine, I just⦠uh. Just worry about yourself, not me. Look, are we going to practice?â
âIf you insist, letâs take it from the second measure.â I pull the violin to my chin.
Gavin isnât playing as well as usual. Is he dumbing it down for my benefit? The nerve. I can hold my own with him or anyone else. And with Nikoâs violin, I sound better than ever before. I totally need to get one like this.
âCass, Iâm going to get⦠a soda,â Gavin quickly gets up and starts for the door. âDo you want one?â
âSure. Just nothing diet. I hate diet sodas.â Gavin leaves the room.
I get up from my chair, stretch and look around the room. Iâm surprised how little itâs changed. Yes, the furniture is different and the dolls are gone, but the room has that familiar feeling of belonging. I walk to Gavinâs dresser in the corner and run my hand across the top, stopping at a small box in the center. The plain wooden box has a crest and the word Young engraved on top. The tip of my finger traces the letters. The box itself is cold, but the letters are warm. I glance at the door, a quick peek wouldnât hurt.
I open the small box.
Inside is a shiny burgundy cloth. I peal back the soft fabric and see a ring. It must be some kind of family heirloom. Picking it up, I run my finger over the gold crest etched deep into a black stone mounted in the center. Just like the box, the ring is cold but the crest is warm. Iâve never seen anything like it. An electrical sensation flows from the ring to my fingers.
I should put it back but I canât help myself. I slide the cool black metal band on. It glides on easily. I hold my hand up. Itâs magnificent and surprisingly snug.
From down the hall, I hear heavy footsteps. Gavin! Quickly, I try to pull the ring off but it wonât budge. My heart races. This is impossible. It canât be stuck. But it is. I shove my finger in my mouth, running my tongue over the cold metal. Pulling it out, I try again to take it off. It wonât budge. The heavy footsteps get closer. Panic fills me and I shut the lid. Rushing back to my seat, I place my hand under my leg between me and the chair. I look and see the burgundy cloth peeking from the box. I start to get up, but stop.
âHereâs your soda,â Gavin says as he enters the room. âDonât worry, itâs not diet.â
âThank you, but I, ah, need to use the bathroom,â I say quickly.
